Effective, comfortable Gum Disease Treatment

What is gum disease?

Although we focus on preventative care such as patient education and regular cleanings, there are times when gum disease does occur. We are well equipped to treat gum (periodontal) disease at any stage, and also take steps to help keep it from recurring.

Periodontal disease starts when plaque, a sticky film of bacteria and food, builds up on your teeth and around the roots. Plaque that isn’t removed hardens into calculus, also called tartar.

What is gum disease?

1) Healthy teeth and gums. 2) Redness and swelling (gingivitis). 3) Bone & tissue loss (periodontitis)

This accumulation causes the gums to detach from the teeth, allowing more bacteria to accumulate in the pockets that have been formed. As gum disease progresses, the pockets increase in size and the gums can become inflamed and swollen. The early stages of gum disease are known as gingivitis.

Bacteria trigger the body’s immune system to produce enzymes, which eat away at the bone surrounding the teeth. As the gum disease progresses further into periodontitis, these enzymes and the inflammation caused by the bacteria leads to the destruction of the surrounding bone and ligaments, and eventual tooth loss.

Ultrasonic scalers for maximum comfort and effectiveness

Ultrasonic scalers for maximum comfort and effectiveness

We use ultrasonic scalers to gently and effectively remove hardened plaque from the surfaces of your teeth.

Ultrasonic scalers use high-frequency vibrations in combination with a water flow to gently and effectively remove deep stains, plaque and tartar. The tiny tip allows for comfortable access to the roots when deeper cleaning is needed, and overall, ultrasonic scalers make cleanings faster and more efficient.

In some cases, our hygienist will use an ultrasonic scaler to remove hardened tartar and treat inflamed gums, as the oral irrigation reaches below the gum line where bacteria flourish.

Scaling and root planing

Scaling and root planing, also known as deep cleaning, is the first step we take to treat moderate gum disease. Your hygienist will begin with the scaling process, gently and skillfully removing hardened dental plaque from your teeth.

To discourage the future growth of bacteria, the roots of your teeth will be “planed” to smooth the surface. Since it’s difficult for bacteria to adhere to the freshly smoothed surfaces, your gums can regenerate without further irritation. The gum tissue will subsequently shrink, tighten, and reattach to the teeth.

Eliminating the bacteria

Eliminating the bacteria

ARESTIN® therapy contains tiny microspheres filled with a powerful, time-release antibiotic. These microspheres are placed exactly where you need them, between the teeth and gums, to help eliminate any bacteria that may remain after a scaling and planing procedure.
